How to Find a Good Drywall Contractor in Athens GA (10 Questions to Ask)

Ten essential questions to vet any Athens drywall contractor before signing β licensing, insurance, scope, warranty, and more.
Drywall Contractors Vary Wildly. Vet Yours.
Like most trades, drywall contractors in the Athens GA area range from excellent to terrible. The difference shows up months or years later β in joints that crack, fasteners that pop, texture that doesn't match, or callbacks the contractor never returns. The best protection is asking the right questions upfront. Here are ten I'd ask if I were hiring someone other than my own crew.
1. Are you Georgia licensed and insured?
Ask for both the license number and current certificates of insurance (general liability and workers' comp). Don't accept "we have insurance" β get the document, with your name listed as additional insured if it's a larger project. Without workers' comp, if a crew member gets hurt on your property, you could be liable.
2. Can I see references from work done in the Athens area in the last 12 months?
Recent local references matter more than out-of-area testimonials. Call two or three. Ask if the contractor showed up when promised, communicated well, and stood behind the work after it was complete.
3. Will you provide a written, itemized quote?
A real quote breaks down square footage, board type, mud coats, finish level, corner bead type, cleanup, and warranty. A one-line price for "drywall work" is a red flag.
4. What finish level are you quoting?
If they don't know what finish level means, end the conversation. The answer should be "Level 4 unless you want Level 5 in critical rooms."
5. Who will actually be on the job?
Is this the owner's own crew, or is it being subcontracted? Both can be fine, but you should know. Ask how long the crew has worked together.
6. How will you protect my home during the work?
Listen for specifics: plastic on floors, masking on adjacent walls, HEPA-filtered sanders, end-of-day cleanup. Vague answers mean dust everywhere.
7. What's your written workmanship warranty?
One year minimum for settlement cracks and popped fasteners is industry standard. Get it in writing.
8. How do you handle change orders?
Any change to the scope should require a written change order signed by both parties before work proceeds. Verbal "while you're at it" requests are how budgets blow up.
9. What's your payment schedule?
For larger projects, 25β35% deposit, 25β35% at hanging complete, balance at final walk-through is reasonable. Anyone asking for 100% upfront is a red flag.
10. Can you show me a recent finish in person?
The best contractors will gladly point you to a recent project or invite you to a current job site to see the finish under real lighting. If they're proud of the work, they'll show it.
One Final Check: Google Reviews and BBB
Look at the contractor's Google Business reviews β read the bad ones especially. Look at how they responded. Patterns of unresolved complaints tell you everything you need to know.
