Kitchen Drywall Isn't Like Bedroom Drywall

Removing Old Soffits

Walls behind sinks and dishwashers, and ceilings under any second-story bathroom, benefit from moisture-resistant green board (Type MR). It's not required by code in most of these areas, but it's cheap insurance against the inevitable small leaks that eventually happen in any kitchen.

Fire-Rated Range Walls

If your kitchen shares a wall with an attached garage, that wall must have 5/8-inch Type X fire-rated drywall on the garage side. When you open up a kitchen wall during a remodel, that's an excellent time to confirm the fire-rating is intact and to seal any penetrations with fire-rated caulk.

Lighting Plan = Drywall Plan

Modern kitchens use recessed LED downlights heavily. Every recessed can is a hole in the ceiling, and every hole needs to be cut precisely, supported properly, and finished cleanly. Plan your lighting layout BEFORE drywall goes up β€” relocating cans afterward means patching, blending, and texture matching that's significantly more expensive than getting it right the first time.

Finishing Considerations

Kitchens benefit from a higher finish level than bedrooms. Most kitchens have under-cabinet lighting and overhead can lights that create raking light across the walls, plus eggshell or satin paint that shows imperfections. We recommend Level 5 finishing on any wall that will be visible above the backsplash, and Level 4 elsewhere.

Coordinating with Other Trades

Kitchen remodels involve electricians (new circuits, GFCI outlets, lighting), plumbers (sink, dishwasher, refrigerator water lines, sometimes pot fillers), HVAC (range hood ducting, sometimes new vents), tile installers (backsplash and floor), painters, and cabinet installers. Drywall goes after rough electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, and before tile, paint, and cabinets. Coordinating these handoffs is essential β€” and a big part of why most homeowners hire a GC for kitchen work.
