How to Prepare Your Athens Home for Drywall Work (Before the Crew Arrives)

A homeowner's prep checklist for drywall installation, repair, or remodel β minimize dust, protect belongings, and speed up the work.
Good Prep Saves Time, Mess, and Money
Athens homeowners often ask what they should do before our drywall crew arrives. A little prep on your end makes the work faster, the dust cleanup easier, and the finished result better. Here's our checklist.
Clear the Work Area Completely
Move everything you can out of the rooms where work will happen β furniture, art, electronics, area rugs, plants, light fixtures (if removable). For large furniture you can't move, move it to the center of the room and we'll cover it with plastic. The less we have to work around, the faster we work and the better the finish.
Protect What Can't Be Moved
Built-ins, kitchens, and heavy furniture get fully covered with plastic taped to the floor. Photograph anything valuable before we arrive β for your records and ours.
Plan for Dust
Even with HEPA-filtered sanders, some dust escapes during drywall work. Recommendations:
- Turn off the HVAC during sanding and cover return air vents temporarily.
- Close doors to rooms not involved in the work.
- Replace HVAC filters after the job (we sometimes do this for you).
- Plan to wipe down adjacent rooms after the project is complete.
Confirm Power and Lighting
We bring our own work lights but it helps if existing fixtures are accessible. Make sure outlets work in the work area for our screw guns and sanders.
Communicate About Pets
Drywall dust and pets don't mix. Plan to confine pets to a separate area of the house or board them during sanding days. We're happy to coordinate with your schedule.
Clear Access
Move vehicles out of the driveway so we can park near the entrance for loading and unloading. Clear pathways from the door to the work area.
Walk Us Through on Day One
Be available on the morning of day one for a 15-minute walk-through. We'll confirm the scope, point out anything we need clarification on, and answer questions about timing. This avoids miscommunication that costs hours later.
Don't Schedule Other Work Simultaneously
It's tempting to have a painter or electrician work in adjacent rooms at the same time. In practice this creates conflicts β drywall dust ruins fresh paint, electrical work interrupts our cure times, and trades step on each other. Schedule sequentially when possible.
Plan for Cure Time
Joint compound needs time to dry between coats. A typical 3-coat finish over a small repair takes 24β48 hours. Whole rooms can take 5β8 working days. Don't plan a dinner party for the day after we finish β give it a week for everything to fully cure and any minor dust to settle.
Have Payment Ready
Final payment is due at the final walk-through. Check, ACH, or major credit cards accepted.
